James H. Sharp founded a subscription school in Moorhead in 1872; it existed two months. Later that year School District No. 2, a permanent five-month school district, was started. Members of the first school board were James Douglas, president; Andrew Holes, treasurer; and James H. Sharp, clerk. Around 1879, it became Independent School District No. 122.
